School Kit and FlexiCash: Enabling Schoolgirls to Dream

Anjali Madavi was in Class 7 when her family declared that they could no longer afford the books she needed for school. Her parents, both agricultural labourers, had always tried to support her education but with 4 mouths to feed and unpredictable work, keeping aside even ₹100 for Anjali's education was proving to be a strain. That year, Anjali was selected for the Lakshyavati bursary support from Grameen Foundation for Social Impact. She started receiving ₹500 a month, no questions asked. The amount proved generous - she could pay her school fee, buy notebooks, pens, and a geometry box. She studied with renewed vigour and scored 89% in Class 10. The bursary continued and was also increased to ₹750 a month. By the time she was in Class 12, Anjali was topping her class in mathematics with scores as high as 90%. She earned a seat in the Computer Science diploma programme at Government Polytechnic, Nagpur. Emboldened by Anjali's drive and results, her parents spent nearly ₹1 lakh of their life savings on her college fees, all without a second thought. Now in her second year of the program, Anjali spends most of her waking minutes either in the lab or in the library. She wants to become a software engineer and teach other girls in her village that ambition isn’t just for the privileged.
